Free radicals are uncharged atoms or molecules (typically highly reactive and short-lived) that have a single unpaired electron in an outer shell. Some free radicals arise normally during metabolism. Sometimes the body's immune system cells purposefully create them to neutralize viruses and bacteria. However, environmental factors such as pollution, radiation, cigarette smoke and herbicides can also encourage free radicals. These OPC compounds are 20 times more powerful than vitamin C and 50 times more powerful than vitamin E in antioxidant capability.
